This year a panel of international judges shortlisted six translations for the International Dublin Literary Award (http://www.dublinliteraryaward.ie/)

 

- The Unseen by Roy Jacobsen, translated from the Norwegian by Don Bartlett and Don Shaw
- Human Acts by Han Kang, translated from the Korean by Deborah Smith
- Distant Light by Antonio Moresco, translated from the Italian by Richard Dixon
- Ladivine by Marie Ndiaye, translated from the French by Jordan Stump
- Baba Dunja’s Last Love by Alina Bronsky, translated from the German by Tim Mohr
- The Transmigration of Bodies by Yuri Herrera, translated from the Spanish by Lisa Dillman

 

 

A panel of colleagues, students and friends of the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation (TCLCT) met on 2 May 2018 to decide which of these translations they would nominate for the Award. 

After a long and lively discussion, the TCLCT mock jury selected The Unseen.

This novel depicts in minute detail the fragility of the lives of the island dwellers and their resilience in a stark environment. With gentle humour the narrator explores the characters' connection to their physical environment and community. Ultimately, however,our choice was not the winner: the 2018 prize was awarded to Mike McCormack for Solar Bones.
